Sawyer- E.H.
I can’t recommend Jennifer highly enough. After a year and a half of trying to manage my dog’s IBD with a handful of traditional veterinarians, I was exhausted and frustrated, aware of the limitations of traditional medicine but unsure of how to maneuver them. My collection of vets had advised that Sawyer eat a hydrolyzed diet + marshmallows, white bread, and white pasta as treats + immune suppressive medication, forever, and that I just accept that my dog might have a shorter lifespan than most. It took me too long to find Jennifer, but when I did, she turned everything around for us. In three months, she cured my dog’s IBD. What stands out to me about our interactions are several things:
1.) Many people who work with animals only know how to work with animals, not how to talk to the humans. Jennifer is not that. She did such a great job at understanding how drained and frustrated I was, and her acknowledgement that I had worked really hard to heal my dog was encouraging. It really helped me listen to and trust her.
2.) Jennifer gave me a long-term plan- we discussed what changes to make and when to make them over the next year to support my dog’s gut. She was realistic and didn’t promise immediate change (though we did get immediate change).
3. I really appreciate her balanced perspective of holistic and traditional medicine. She underscored the need for antibiotics/heavy medication in serious circumstance; she didn’t throw out all of Western medicine as it seems many holistic practitioners tend to do. As my dog has recently undergone a major surgery, this is very important.
Jennifer helped me feed him in a way that his body was prepared to quickly adjust to the surgery, and we are now focusing on healing his gut from the medications required from the surgery. Jennifer is so wise, I can’t see myself ever parting from her. I’ve worked with at least 7 veterinary providers in the last 6 months, and it’s often felt like Jennifer is the only who will tell me the full truth and help me work with it. By far, she’s the one I trust the most.
Jennifer has also shifted my view on what it means to care for a dog: diet is such an under-valued form of healthcare. I often wonder if I had fed my dog home-cooked raw meals his whole life (instead of just starting 6 months ago), how many vet appointments/major health issues we could have avoided. There have been multiple times recently when other providers have been baffled at how my dog has either healed from something quickly or not shown symptoms of lab work findings, and I fully attribute that to his diet, designed by Jennifer. His diet feels like a superpower to me. When I’m ready for a next dog, I plan to seriously consider if I can afford to feed the potential fur ball as he deserves: home cooked and raw. It should be a dog’s right to be fed like this. I am very grateful to Jennifer for this new perspective.
