What is Canicross?
Canicross, or cross-country trail running with dogs, came about when the dog sledding community needed a way to cross-train their teams in the off-season. Canicross first became popular in Europe, with the United Kingdom leading the movement to legitimize the sport.
North American Canicross defines Canicross as the sport of cross-country trail running with dogs. Canicross can be run with one or two dogs, always attached to the runner. The dog(s) wear a non-restrictive, free-motion harness that attaches to a bungee cord or elastic line near the base of the dog’s tail. The human teammate is attached to the dog(s) by a hands-free waist belt.
Veterinary Rehabilitation Services of Virginia and Harness Canicular LLC present the first Canicross race ever in the Commonwealth of Virginia—The 2024 Rehab Rover! Join us on October 5, 2024, for our first in-person 10k and 5k Canicross race and 5K Casual Dog-Friendly Trail run, walk, or hobble! Are you new to Canicross or have a dog in training? There will also be a 5k Dog-Friendly Trail run following the competitive Canicross runs.
Each runner will receive a logo race T-shirt and a finisher medal! *Note: T-shirt/size is not guaranteed if you register after August 30, 2024. Long Sleeve Race Logo shirts will be available for additional purchase.
Are you coming from out of state or do you have a long drive? Make plans to Camp or bring your RV the night before or stay one night after the race. Do not forget to sign up during registration!
Not into camping but need a place to stay on the property for the event? The Clifton House (www.cliftonhouse.farm) will have limited rooms available for the event. Please contactapril@cliftonhouse.farm for reservations.
Whiskers 2 Toes will be on site for the event, offering canine massage appointments for participant dogs. If you would like to book a therapeutic massage for your dog before or after the race, please get in touch with Nancy Lilly at Nancy@whiskers2toes.com or call 540-846-3961. Laser and PEMF mat therapies are also available upon request.

Rodeo Dog is a sporting event. All levels of handling skills are wel- come. Rodeo Dog can be experienced as a simple bonding event or it can be a very competitive event. All dogs and handlers are welcome. This will be a unique experience for you!

Canine massage is a branch of massage therapy that promotes health in dogs. Specifically, canine massage therapy is a form of alternative therapy, the benefits of which may include relaxation, increased oxygenation, relief from pain, improved joint flexibility, and miscellaneous benefits to the immune system.

Underwater treadmills for canines facilitate safe physical therapy and workouts with high resistance for cardiovascular exercise and low impact for reduced stress on bones and joints. Rehab Vet Dr. Katherine Johnson will be doing demonstrations of how to use this to rehabilitate and prevent injury.
